SciCafe 2.0 in Copenhagen

As part of our SciCafe2.0 activities we recently ran a session for practitioners and academics involved and interested in participatory engagement activities. It was held as part of a conference on an Innovative Civil Society organised in Copenhagen by the Living Knowledge network of science shops over 9th to 11th April 2014. See: 6th Living Knowledge Conference.
The conference hosted a SciCafe 2.0 session entitled “Scientific Citizenship: Deepening and widening participation and raise the debating and decision making quality”, chaired by Bálint Balázs from ESSRG.
During the session, a participatory workshop has been conducted by the CNR Science Communication and Education Research Unit. The workshop, based on Metaplan methodology, aimed to elicit enablers and barriers from the participants to take part in on-line discussions. The results of the discussion are represented in the diagram below.
The workshop generated a wide variety of insights regarding user requirements, the one we would like to draw out here was the repeated emphasis on the social constituents - synchronicity, emotions, collaboration, attendance, reputation, reaching consensus.
